A scenic loop through the Chelm Hills

Southern Panoramas of Chelm is a bike route that will take you on a 30-kilometer loop through the hilly countryside south of the city.

The route leads through quiet villages: Strupin Duży, Depułtycze Królewskie, Zagroda and Uher. Along the way you’ll pass farmland descending into valleys, old lime avenues and chapels. It’s a landscape where time passes more slowly – and the only thing chasing you is the wind at your back on the final return leg.

For whom? For cyclists looking for a route with an intermediate level of difficulty. The hills give you a bit of a challenge, but reward you with panoramas. Perfect for a spring/summer weekend when the fields are in bloom.

Points along the route

  1. 1

    MOR Chelm-Basilany (start)

    Bicycle Service Area, parking, restroom

Start and finish of the loop. The MOR at the southern exit from Chelm offers racks, a pump and benches – the perfect place for a warm-up and final rest.

The starting point of the trail is located by the Green Velo at the MOR (cyclists’ resting place) Basilany. This is the area of a former village, a fragment of which is today within the city limits. In this area, near the Borek Forest, there was a military shooting range in the 19th century and a cemetery where soldiers of various nationalities, including Russian, German and Austrian, were buried.

    Strupin, Krzywice - Kolonia

Villages with the first panoramic view of Chelm from the south.

  3. 3

    Depułtycze Królewskie

    Historic royal village

A former royal village known since the Middle Ages. In the feudal system of old Poland, villages were mainly divided into noble (private), ecclesiastical and just royal (so-called royal lands). Depułtycze belonged to the table estate of the Chelm castle, which means that income from this village directly fed the royal treasury or was used to maintain the local royal administration (starosty).

  4. 4

    Depułtycze Nowe

From the hill behind the village there is a view of the eastern part of the Chelm Hills. On a clear day the visibility reaches tens of kilometers.

For centuries the village belonged to noble families. It was a typical “private village”, where life revolved around the manor house. The entire area is located on deposits of writing chalk.

  7. 7

    Airport

    Depułtycze Królewskie

The biggest attraction of the village is the airport of the State Academy of Applied Sciences in Chelm. Driving past, you can often see avionics taking off and landing.

The surroundings of the Zoltanka Reservoir

Zoltance Lagoon – an artificial reservoir has become a professional swimming area. The lagoon is divided into a recreational part (with a sandy beach, pier and infrastructure) and a part for anglers, where there is peace and quiet.

Infrastructure: You’ll find beach volleyball courts, an outdoor gym, and great dining facilities in season.

  9. 9

    Weremowice

Historically, Weremowice (like neighboring Depultycze Nowe) functioned as a nobleman’s village. In old records one can find information about the local grange. To this day, the layout of fields and baulks betrays the former agricultural character of this village, which, despite its proximity to the city, has remained almost intact.

    Yellowtanks

    Golden fields, shrine

The village from which our route took its “golden” character. Fields of grain in the summer sun here create a landscape like from a painting. By the roadside stands a brick chapel from the 19th century.

Zoltance lies on the Garka River (a tributary of the Uherka River). The valley of this river is a very picturesque area, abounding in wildlife. Along the river one can observe numerous beaver lodges. Traces of their activity (felled trees) are visible almost at every step in the less frequented parts of the village.

  11. 11

    Zawadowka

The last hill before the city

Zawadowka is a key point for cyclists. The village directly borders one of the favorite recreational spots of Chelmans – Borek Forest and Kumowa Valley.

Attraction: you can quickly reach forest educational trails, an amphitheater and cross-country skiing trails from here.

  12. 12
