   Green Velo

   Drive through the city on the Green Velo trail Chelm Water Park

   At Chelm Water Park, turn into Trubakowska Street, and then go straight through Piwna Street and Dluga Street. Continue until you leave the city.

   Sobowice Peat Bog Reserve

   Transitional bogs, rare flora

   “Sobowice Bog” (the site was established in 2004), which protects a naturally valuable low bog.

   Sobowice bog is the only place in Poland where a rare nocturnal butterfly called xylomia strix (Xylomoia strix) has been found. In addition to it, other valuable species live here: Oedipus strix and praying mantis, which attract insect researchers from all over the country.

   The Sobowice bog is a very wet and boggy area. There are no extensive footbridges for hikers, so admiring the reserve is best planned from its periphery or by sticking to designated nature trails. It is mandatory to bring wellingtons or waterproof boots if you want to get closer to the border of the forest and the bog!

   Yellowtanks

   Golden fields, shrine

   The village from which our route took its “golden” character. Fields of grain in the summer sun here create a landscape like from a painting. By the roadside stands a brick chapel from the 19th century.

   Zoltance lies on the Garka River (a tributary of the Uherka River). The valley of this river is a very picturesque area, abounding in wildlife. Along the river one can observe numerous beaver lodges. Traces of their activity (felled trees) are visible almost at every step in the less frequented parts of the village.

   Zoltance Lagoon – The artificial reservoir has become a professional swimming area. The lagoon is divided into a recreational part (with a sandy beach, pier and infrastructure) and a part for anglers, where there is peace and quiet.

   Infrastructure: You’ll find beach volleyball courts, an outdoor gym, and great dining facilities in season.

   Borek Forest

   Inside the forest complex is the “Borek” nature reserve. Its purpose is to protect the natural oak forest with admixture of pine and birch.

   The Borek forest is located at the junction of the Chelm Hills and the Dubienskiy Depression. A characteristic feature of this forest is the occurrence of karst phenomena. You can find small depressions in the area, which are the result of the chalky subsoil being washed out by water, which is unique to this region of Poland.

   Along the route there are boards describing not only trees, but also rare undergrowth plants, such as wolfsbane (which blooms beautifully pink in early spring, but is highly poisonous) and various species of forest orchids.

   Wolvinov Reserve

   a sanctuary for the redshank and lapwing

   It is only 1.12 hectares in size, but hides natural treasures. Wolwinow is a reserve that was created in 1972 to protect xerothermic (thermophilic) vegetation. The biggest curiosity is that these “steppe” plants grow in a small mid-forest clearing in the heart of the Borek Forest. You can also find here: Alsatian gorse, Golden-headed lily, and Crow’s-foot ninetail.

   Wolviniv owes its richness to the chalky soil. It is the calcareous soil that makes water seep quickly into the depths, and the surface heats up rapidly, creating ideal conditions for plants that we would normally encounter on the steppes of Ukraine or southern Europe.
