The Orthodox temple was erected in 1846-1852 for the Russian troops stationed in the city. The construction work was directed by Jan Lasota. The execution of the iconostasis was entrusted to a Warsaw sculptor of Swiss origin, Frederick Blickle. The paintings and frescoes, meanwhile, are by Bonawentura Dabrowski, a painter also from Warsaw and experienced in sacred art. The main part of the project was essentially completed in 1849, but finishing touches were still being made to the temple and its surroundings in the following years.
After World War I, it was the only surviving Orthodox church in Chelm. After World War II, there were renovations of the building (in 1949 and 1990) and restoration of the iconostasis (in 1991-1993). In 1928 it received the rank of a sobor, and since 1989 it has been a concathedra of the Lublin-Khelm diocese.
