The history of the place dates back to the time of Prince Daniel Romanovich and the first walled urban settlement, which was granted city rights in 1392. In the early 19th century, after the demolition of the walls, the center and suburbs began to merge into a unified structure. During this period wooden buildings were replaced by brick ones. By the end of the 19th century, tenement houses were built on Lubelska, Reformacka, Kopernika, Krzywa, Pocztowa and Mickiewicza streets, which have survived to this day.<\/p>\n
Today the former market is called Dr. Edward Luczkowski Square. There are several buildings in the central part of the Old Town: <\/p>\n
– Old Town Well: the object was rebuilt and renovated, next to which a statue of one Chelmis was placed.<\/p>\n
– Remains of the former city hall: The city hall was demolished in the mid-19th century as a result of damage caused by fires. <\/p>\n
– White Bear Sculpture: It is located just behind the old town well.<\/p>\n
– Monument to the Fallen for the Fatherland: An obelisk with a crowned eagle, founded in 1930.The monument bears the names of Chelm residents killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war. <\/p>\n
– Wooden kiosk: Object from 1913, built by merchant Mejer Dobkowski.<\/p>\n
Historic buildings are located within the Old Town, including the Kupfer tenement, originally the Slavic Hotel (27 Lubelska Street), the Lewinsztajn tenement (8 Lubelska Street), the pre-war hotels “Viktorja” (30 Lubelska Street) and “Central” (42 Lubelska Street), the eclectic tenement designed by Stanislaw Diehl (6 Reformacka Street).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
